The AI Maturity Curve
Knowing where your organisation sits on the AI maturity curve is one of the most practical things you can do right now. To be clear, the curve doesn’t just measure whether your team has done AI training, but how well your tools, workflows, leadership, governance and culture are working together. It's a whole-of-organisation lens. That said, training is one of the most powerful levers you can pull on your AI journey and where you focus on your training effort should be shaped by where you sit on the maturity curve.
The organisations getting the most from AI have a clear picture of where they sit on the maturity curve. It helps them invest in the right things at the right time. To simplify things, I have broken this down to three levels.
Level 1. Tool Literacy
This is about properly understanding the AI tools already inside your business, what they can do, where their limits are and how to use them well for your specific context. This might look like a team sitting down together to explore what their chosen tool can and can't do in their day-to-day work.
Level 2. Efficiency Harnessing
This is where understanding turns into real time savings. Teams move from knowing what the tools can do, to actively using them to reclaim hours in the week. The key insight here is that AI isn't set-and-forget. It rewards ongoing interaction and refinement. The teams making the most progress at this level treat AI like a capable colleague and invest in the relationship.
Level 3. Workforce Transformation
This is where the competitive gap is opening up. Level 3 isn't about putting AI into existing workflows, it's about redesigning the work to integrate AI at a logical point. People doing the work are brought into the process to co-design how things get done, rebuilding workflows based on where humans add the most value and where AI closes the gap.
The training foundations you build at Level 1 and 2 determine how quickly you can scale when you're ready.
